The Future of Housing and Why We Must Do Things Differently

In March 2024, Building Ministers from all Australian jurisdictions came together for the Building Ministers Meeting in Sydney. As a result, they announced an ambitious goal to build 1.2 million homes in the next five years. This goal is steeped in the critical need for increased housing supply around the country – in both metropolitan and regional areas.

Furthermore, Ministers acknowledged the important role that innovative and advanced construction technologies could play in growing the supply of housing.

“We need to build more quality homes quickly - prefab and modular housing gives us a chance to do that,” said Hon Ed Husic, Minister for Industry and Science.

While the need to address housing is critical, so is the amount of waste produced by the construction industry. In fact, the construction industry is one of our country’s largest contributors to waste.

“In 2020/21, Australia generated an estimated 75.8 million tonnes (Mt) of waste, equivalent to 2.95 tonnes per person. The largest waste categories were building and demolition materials (25.1 Mt), organics (14.4 Mt), ash (12.0 Mt), and hazardous waste (7.4 Mt),” shared Hon Tanya Plibersek, Minister for the Environment and Water in the biennial 2022 National Waste Report.

It’s this data and insights that cement the need for innovative construction methods to enter the local market that offer alternative ways to deliver rapid housing.

AltForm’s Ability to Deliver Rapid Quality Housing

AltForm blends rapid housing with modern luxury.

“Solving Australia’s housing crisis isn’t just about building more homes—it’s about doing it smarter, faster and at scale. Traditional construction methods can take up to a year to complete a single home and often struggle to scale due to delays and resource constraints, which aren’t looking to improve in the short to medium term – especially domestically,” says Tony Phillips, Executive General Manager, AltForm.

At AltForm, we’ve engineered systems that can deliver homes on average, up to 45% faster than a conventional build, with the capacity to build thousands of homes each year.

“This isn’t just about building homes—it’s about redefining the future of housing and providing real, scalable solutions to the crisis. It means developing great designs that are flexible enough to be used for disaster relief, and sophisticated enough to be the future of luxury offerings,” adds Tony Phillips, Executive General Manager, AltForm.

AltForm’s Patented System is Made to Measure

When AltForm components arrive on a building site, they are ready to be installed. All AltForm components are made to measure, and supplied prefabricated and predrilled. This vastly reduces waste on site when compared to traditional construction methods.

“At AltForm, we aim to provide an alternative solution to conventional housing construction. A solution that packages the framing, windows, insulated walls and cladding all within one integrated system, says Daniel Yeung, Head of Design, AltForm.

“By prefabricating our wall panels in a quality controlled facility off-site, we give builders and developers the option to significantly reduced construction time on-site,” adds Daniel Yeung, Head of Design, AltForm.
